La bicicleta en un invento que se le atribuye a Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519), debido a los dibujos que se encuentran en el Códice Atlántico. Este códice es una colección de dibujos y escritura del inventor de finales del siglo XV.
Hay quienes ponen en duda que el invento se le atribuya a Da Vinci, pues, como en todas las historias de los grandes inventos, se especula o se aportan datos. Para este, se dice que el dibujo está firmado por uno de sus discípulos, o que el dibujo apareció en el reverso del folio o página 133 justo durante el proceso de restauración del códice, después de 1965.
Otros investigadores muestran como evidencia, para atribuirle a Leonardo el boceto de la invención de la bicicleta, el trabajo de muchos otros bocetos de conceptos como la cadena y la rueda, y aseguran que fue la cadena la llave para el desarrollo de futuros prototipos de la bicicletas. Aunque, según la historia de las patentes, fue hasta 1818 cuando se patentó este invento, llamado la máquina de correr por Karl Drais.
En los museos donde se hace homenaje a Leonardo Da Vinci, es frecuente encontrar prototipos de la bicicleta con pedales, basados en sus dibujos. Afortunadamente, en Internet podemos hacer recorridos virtuales de muchos museos; y explorar el Código Atlántico, digitalizado en 1119 páginas, debidamente clasificada toda la colección de 1478 a 1518, del gran inventor del renacimiento.
